Island Rügen

Rügen is the largest and probably most beautiful German island, it lies before the pommerschen Baltic Sea coast and belonged to Mecklenburg - Vorpommern.

The "gate" to the island ruegen is the Hanseatic city Stralsund. Strelasund broad the island, by the damdam dam over 2 km connected with the mainland, have a max. Length of 52 km (from south to north), maximum width of 41 km in the south and a surface of 926 km².

The overall length of the coast of Rügen amounts to 574 km.

The island Rügen forms the district ruegen together with the island Hiddensee, unites smaller islands with the district town Bergen auf Rügen.

Further cities are Sassnitz, Putbus and Garz. In addition the Baltic Sea baths Binz, Goehren, Sellin, Baabe, Thiessow come.

The island Rügen is visited due to the landscape beautifulnesses and the kilometer-long, finely sand beaches by numerous holiday-makers.
